According to the National Weather Service (NWS), cold temperatures and wind chills cause an average of 28 deaths per year and winter storms cause 39 deaths per year in the United States. Winter weather creates dangerous conditions including icy, snow- and sleet-covered roads; in Wisconsin, these conditions are responsible for an average of 50,000 vehicle accidents and 45 deaths each winter.

Beets

Although beets did not originate on the continental United States, Native Americans have long used beets for food and art, adding rich color to their daily life. The ROOT and GREENS of the beet are both edible. The beet root is the sweetest in the root vegetable family.

The Great American Smoke Out

Since 1977, individuals have participated in the Great American Smoke Out events across the country. This day, which is held every third Thursday in November and hosted by the American Cancer Society, encourages smokers to stop smoking for one day, in hopes that they will quit for good.
